Returning To Sanity – Afternoon Workshop on Step 2 with John Bruna

Returning to Sanity

Step 2 Workshop with John Bruna

October 18th, 2020

Join us for this online special event benefiting the new Way of Compassion Foundation Recovery Services program. John Bruna is offering this workshop, focusing on the 2nd step. The workshop is offered on a free-will donation basis with all of the proceeds going to help fund the new program. The workshop is open to everyone, whether you are in a 12 step program or not. John feels strongly that everyone can benefit immensely by integrating the steps into their daily life. The retreat will focus on universal practices that support all faiths, spiritual traditions, including simply being human.

At the root of addiction, as well as many other mental and emotional challenges, is an unhealthy obsession with self that leads to a separation from others and the world. The 12 steps are a prescription to counteract this self-obsession and reconnect us to the world in realistic, healthy, and productive ways so we can leave our island of isolation and rejoin humanity with all it’s joys, sorrows, and wonder. It is here that we get to discover that we are not broken or less-than, we not the center of the universe but a valuable part of it, just like everyone else. We are worthy, capable, and have much to offer the world.

In essence, all of the steps help us eliminate an unhealthy sense of self (an ego that separates us) and develop connection, worthiness, and value that naturally gives rise to humility. A natural humility that arises because we no longer need to impress anyone or prove our value. We feel it.

In our current times, with a pandemic, instability, social, and economic upheavals, many of us have struggled with increasing stress, anxiety, and fear.  It is easy to get caught up in rumination and let our mind drag us around from one potential outcome to another.  In the process, we forget that the majority of that stress, worry, and fear is coming from our own minds and not from our actual experience.  We also forget that the real source of our well-being does not come from external events,  rather it comes from how we perceive and respond to them.

The second step invites us to remember there’s a much greater truth than our mental and emotional ruminations and fears. That we are not the center of the universe rather a valuable part of it.  Instead of being a prisoner of our self-centered ruminations and exaggerations, we can return to sanity, grounding in our recovery and reality – the current moment.
