SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: 3 Principal Aspects of the Path - Online and In Person
DESCRIPTION:The Three Principal Aspects of the Path: A Daylong Retreat with John Bruna\n\nHosted by the Durango Dharma Center\nSunday\, March 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. IN PERSON & ON ZOOM \nIn this daylong retreat\, John Bruna will explore the timeless wisdom of The Three Principal Aspects of the Path\, a short yet profound teaching by Je Tsongkhapa that distills the essence of the entire Buddhist path into just fourteen verses. Together\, we will unpack these pith instructions and explore how they speak directly to the challenges\, aspirations and inner struggles of modern life. \nDrawing from classical Buddhist philosophy while making clear connections to contemporary Western psychology and therapeutic models\, this retreat offers both depth and accessibility. It is well-suited for those new to Buddhist thought as well as seasoned practitioners seeking to deepen and integrate their practice. \nAt the heart of this teaching are three essential qualities that support genuine well-being\, inner freedom and compassionate engagement with the world: \nRenunciation\nLearning to recognize how misperceptions and habitual patterns of mind give rise to unnecessary suffering—for ourselves and others. Renunciation in this context is not withdrawal from life\, but a clear-eyed understanding of what truly leads to happiness\, freedom and meaning\, and how to cultivate those conditions in daily life. \nBodhicitta (Great Compassion)\nDiscovering the profound strength\, resilience and healing that emerge when we cultivate connection and an altruistic motivation to benefit others. Bodhicitta transforms personal practice into a source of purpose\, belonging and service. \nWisdom\nDeveloping the capacity to understand ourselves and our experience of the world more accurately. Through this clarity\, we begin to loosen deeply ingrained misperceptions that fuel emotional reactivity\, distress and confusion—opening the door to greater balance\, insight and freedom. \nThroughout the retreat\, participants will be guided through reflection\, contemplation and practice aimed at integrating these teachings into real life—not merely as philosophical ideas\, but as living principles that support healing\, ethical living and genuine happiness. \nRegister at the Durango Dharma Center.

SUMMARY:11th-Step Retreat
DESCRIPTION:11th-Step Retreat Open To All People in Recovery of any Kind\, Family\, and Friends\n\n\n\nMercy Center\, Auburn\, CA – September 11-14\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn and Peter are delighted to return to the Mercy Center in Auburn\, CA for their annual 11th Step retreat. The retreat will focus on using the skills of meditation\, mindfulness\, and prayers of one’s own spiritual tradition to deepen their connection with their chosen spiritual path and develop more resiliency\, inner peace\, and joy in your life. There will be instruction\, group discussions\, meditation\, and private reflection time. \n\n\n\nA few quotes on prayer and meditation \n\n\n\n“There is a direct linkage among self-examination\, meditation\, and prayer. Taken separately these practices can bring much relief and benefit. But when they are logically related and interwoven\, the result is an unshakable foundation for life” (Page 98\, 12 &12). \n\n\n\n“Emotional balance is one of the first results of meditation\, and our experience bears this out” (Page 47\, NA Basic Text). \n\n\n\n“Loving-kindness does not mean making sure you’re feeling good all the time – trying to set up your life so that you’re comfortable every moment. Rather\, it means setting up your life so that you have time for meditation and self-reflection\, for kindhearted\, compassionate self-honesty.” Pema Chödrön \n\n\n\nThis retreat is hosted by the Mercy Center in Auburn\, CA. Registration is open. You learn more and register by calling the Mercy Center at 530-887-2019. Here is a direct link to the retreat on their website – 11th Step Retreat.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Online and In-Person
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Durango Dharma Center\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nExtracting the Essence of This Rare and Precious Human Birth: A Daylong Retreat with John Bruna\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, May 18th from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm IN PERSON & ON ZOOM \nWe invite you to join John Bruna\, former Buddhist monk and beloved spiritual director of the Way of Compassion Dharma Center\, for a full-day retreat exploring one of the most essential contemplations in Buddhist practice—the preciousness of our human life and how to make it truly meaningful. \nAbout the Retreat \nIn these challenging times\, it’s easy to overlook the extraordinary opportunity we have each day to cultivate well-being\, resiliency and meaning. In this daylong retreat\, John Bruna will gently and clearly guide participants through reflections and teachings on how to recognize the rare and fortunate conditions of our human existence and extract its essence—living with greater awareness of the true causes of genuine happiness and liberation from the causes of suffering. \nDrawing from classical Buddhist teachings and infused with his characteristic warmth\, humility\, and real-life wisdom\, John will help us explore: \n\nWhat makes this human birth “rare and precious”\nWhy recognizing this truth is essential to spiritual growth\nHow we can overcome distraction\, hesitation\, and self-doubt\nPractical ways to live more mindfully\, compassionately\, and intentionally\n\nThe retreat will include teaching sessions\, guided meditations\, contemplative exercises\, and opportunities for personal reflection and discussion. Whether you are a long-time practitioner or newly exploring the Dharma\, this retreat offers a space to reconnect with what matters most and to deepen your sense of purpose and presence. \nAs John often reminds us in his teachings\, “It is not what we have\, but how we live that determines the quality of our life.” This rare and precious human life offers us the potential for deep transformation—not someday\, but here and now. This retreat is an invitation to pause\, reflect and step into the life you truly wish to live\, supported by the Dharma and a compassionate community. \nCOST: The Dharma Center operates on the gift economy and the cost of the daylong is on a two-part sliding scale. The fee that you offer through the registration system ($50\, $70\, $89\, or $108 or scholarship options of $25 or $10) supports our nonprofit\, which pays the costs of the building\, utilities\, website\, administration\, etc. In keeping with our 2\,600-year-old tradition\, the teacher of the class is not compensated but rather shares the teachings freely. In turn\, you are invited into the practice of dana\, or generosity\, a gift economy system that has been alive since the time of the Buddha. You are invited to make a donation to support the teacher in continuing their valuable work. Donations in any amount whatsoever are gratefully received\, and the practice of generosity is always elective. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 18th from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm \nLOCATION: Durango Dharma Center\, 1800 East Third Avenue\, Suite 109 in Durango and Zoom \nTo Register: Durango Dharma Center Registration \nQUESTIONS: If you have questions\, please reach out to Kurt\, at registrar@durangodharma.org or 970-426-8983.

SUMMARY:John Teaching at the Center for Contemplative Research
DESCRIPTION:John Bruna on the Role of the Spiritual Teacher\, Part 2:\nDiscernment\, the Four Reliances\, and the Path of Authentic Learning\nSaturday\, April 12th\, 10:00 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time (MDT)\n9 a.m. PDT / 12 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. Central European Time (CET) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome John Bruna back to Ghatika Monthly\, where he’ll build on last month’s discussion of the teacher’s role in spiritual development. \n“The Role of the Spiritual Teacher: Part 2” explores how we deepen our discernment and responsibility as students. How do we evaluate a teacher’s wisdom without blind devotion or rigid skepticism? What tools do we have to stay grounded in our own integrity while remaining open to learning? \nJohn teaching at CCR \nIn this session\, John will introduce the traditional Buddhist framework of the Four Reliances—a powerful guide for cultivating insight\, avoiding spiritual bypass\, and honoring both inner and outer wisdom. We’ll examine how these principles help us stay rooted in truth even when navigating complex teacher-student dynamics. Additionally\, we’ll reflect on the value of a spiritual teacher not as an authority to blindly follow\, but as a mirror\, mentor\, and companion on the path of awakening. \nThrough stories\, questions\, and shared inquiry\, we’ll explore how the relationship with a teacher—when grounded in mutual respect and clear ethics—can become one of the most transformative aspects of spiritual life. \nWhether you’re seeking a teacher\, learning to trust your own inner guidance\, or exploring the dynamics of spiritual community\, this talk will offer meaningful tools to help you walk your path with clarity and compassion. \nWe look forward to seeing you Saturday. In case you missed Part 1 of this talk series\, here is a link to watch it – Role of a Spiritual Teacher\, Part One. \nTo attend online: Zoom Meeting Link (Meeting ID:860 6631 6034) \nIn Person at Miyo Samten Ling Hermitage\, 1 Carmelite Way\, Crestone\, CO. Find us in Majnushri Chapel\n(the building with the bell tower). \nA Note of Support\nWe offer these sessions freely to ensure that anyone can access contemplative techniques for cultivating a healthier\, more balanced mind\, regardless of income. But without your generous support\, Ghatika Monthly would not exist. Whether you’re a longtime member of the Ghatika Monthly community or just recently joined our mailing list\, please consider making a donation to keep these valuable teachings coming for years in the future. \nTo make a secure donation\, click here.

Bruna\, a former Buddhist monk and renowned mindfulness teacher\, distills years of wisdom into an accessible\, engaging\, and actionable book that speaks to anyone seeking a more intentional and meaningful existence. \nKey Strengths of the Book:\n\n\nA Practical Approach to Mindfulness \n\nUnlike books that treat mindfulness as just meditation or stress reduction\, Bruna presents it as a way of living—a conscious approach to aligning daily actions with one’s values.\nHe emphasizes that mindfulness is not just about awareness but about making skillful choices that lead to a more fulfilling life.\n\n\n\nThe Role of Values in a Meaningful Life \n\nBruna explains with evidence that true well-being comes not from chasing pleasure or external validation but from living in alignment with deeply held values.\nHe provides exercises and reflections to help readers identify what truly matters to them and how to structure their lives around those values.\n\n\n\nBreaking Free from Unconscious Patterns \n\nThe book highlights how habitual\, unconscious behaviors and thought patterns often keep people stuck in cycles of stress and dissatisfaction.\nBruna offers mindfulness techniques that help readers develop awareness\, self-discipline\, and intentionality\, allowing them to respond to life’s challenges with wisdom rather than reactivity.\n\n\n\nIntegrating Mindfulness with Daily Life \n\nBruna emphasizes that mindfulness is not limited to meditation; rather\, it is about how we engage with our relationships\, work\, and daily activities.\nHe offers practical exercises\, real-life examples\, and guided reflections to help readers integrate mindfulness into their everyday routines.\n\n\n\nA Balanced and Inclusive Perspective \n\nWhile grounded in Buddhist teachings\, the book is secular and accessible to people of all backgrounds.\nBruna speaks from personal experience—his journey from addiction to becoming a monk and mindfulness teacher—which makes his insights relatable and inspiring.\n\n\n\nFinal Thoughts:\nThe Wisdom of a Meaningful Life is more than just a book on mindfulness; it is a blueprint for intentional and values-driven living. Bruna’s compassionate and practical approach makes mindfulness feel achievable and deeply relevant in today’s fast-paced world. \nThis book is a must-read for anyone looking to cultivate greater self-awareness\, purpose\, and fulfillment\, whether they are new to mindfulness or already on a personal growth journey. It’s an empowering reminder that true happiness is not found in external circumstances\, but in how we choose to engage with life itself. \n\nTestimonials\n“John’s course was truly transformative. Breaking his book down into chapters and exploring them one or two at a time each week made the practice so much more accessible and meaningful. I feel more present in my daily life\, less rushed\, and more aware when my mind starts to drag me around. Most importantly\, I’ve developed a deeper sense of love for myself and others. I’m so grateful for this experience—thank you!” – Pam P \n“I would recommend this course to anyone looking to gain the tools to have more peace and serenity. To help them be present and better at focusing on what they are doing at that time staying in the moment. It helped me to be more apart of the mindfulness community and see I am not alone in my daily struggles. The course helped me with my meditation and how to better set my intentions for the day. It also helped me understand that we are all trying to be happy and get our needs met which helped me to let go of resentments. The course showed me I may not like someone but that doesn’t mean they are a bad person. I learned lots of these examples to be on a better path.” Pat S \n“I feel very special to have been a member of John’s first Wisdom class. I was a little intimidated\, but realized quickly that this course was truly for anyone and everyone – John made it so welcoming and easy! The little bit of suffering to overcome my initial intimidation ended with such a reward. Thank you John.” – Karen R \n“This course and book were enjoyable and full of learning to lead a more meaningful like. The on-line classes and daily learnings helped me to focus on my values and how to live those values as I lived each day. As I was taking the course\, my interactions with others improved as a result of what I was learning and integrating. John is a wonderful and caring teacher.” – Mike T
