Day-Long Meditation with John

Two Retreats in One – In-Person and Online
Hosted by the Way of Compassion Dharma Center

“Meditation means learning to control our minds, thereby protecting our minds from domination by delusion and other afflictions.” – 14th Dalai Lama

“How many obscurations and how many afflictions have been subdued or cleared away? This is the true test of meditation, not what wonderful or special experiences we might have.” 17th Karmapa

“Whether we sit with our arms folded this way and our legs crossed that way is of little consequence. But it is extremely important to check and see if whatever meditation we do is an actual remedy for our suffering.” Lama Yeshe

A Day or a Half-Day of Meditation

Every month, we will now be offering a two-part meditation retreat. The first session is from 9 am to 12 pm and will be more beginner-friendly, offering guidance, and providing participants with an understanding of the foundational methods and tips to establish and maintain a meditation practice. The second session will be from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and have more meditation, silence, and some time for discussion and questions. Participants can attend either one or both.

Both sessions will focus on shamatha (calm abiding) meditation. Shamatha is a universal practice that can be applied to any spiritual or religious practice and it enhances any other meditation practice by establishing mental and emotional balance.  It is the antidote for a ruminating and busy mind.

The morning session will be broken up into three fifty-minute segments, with teaching, discussion, and a meditation session. There will be breaks and time to stretch.

The afternoon session will consist of three back-to-back 24-minute meditations with short stretch breaks in between, followed by discussion and a question and answer period.

*With the cases of COVID continuing we are offering limited in-person spots for fully vaccinated and boosted individuals.
