The Power of a Good Example

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For indeed that’s all who ever have.”

Margaret Mead

Never underestimate the power of a good example. Though we often don’t realize it, our actions have a far-reaching impact on many. We really have no idea how many people observe us daily. They may be glancing through the window of a passing car or a fellow diner in a restaurant. As we observe others, others also observe us. Often this is very subtle and doesn’t seem to leave much of an imprint. However, even routine and daily acts of politeness are noticed. Maybe not even consciously, but they are noticed. For example, we notice tension, anger and acts of violence quickly. They stand out because they are not the norm. We quickly notice when something is awry. This means that we are also aware, though usually more subtly, when there is no tension and we feel safe and at ease.

Creating a safe and caring environment starts with how we treat each other. The more we do this, the more it becomes the norm. People recognize our smile and respond to our kindness. Though we can see the direct impact on the person in front of us, often we are also impacting those around us. It is much more than a ripple effect, it is a cumulative effect of how we all treat each other. We collectively create the environment we inhabit by how we treat each other. The more we treat each other with kindness, the more kindness becomes the norm in our environment. John Bruna – October 27, 2015
